Gerolf van de Perre
In 1999, Flemish painter
Gerolf van de Perre moves to Beijing together with his
wife, a sinologue. During their three year stay, he
paints his impressions on rice paper, back in Flanders
Van de Perre digitally mounts his paintings to a graphic
narrative.
The result is titled ‘Steenstof’ (‘Stone
Dust’) and is a convincing, unpolished portrait of the
post-communist Chinese capital - a portrait painted in
Western linear perspective on Oriental rice paper.
The jury appreciated Van de Perre’s daring choice
for a long, fragmented story. Also it was impressed by
Van de Perre’s open approach of comics from a painting
background.
After ‘Steenstof’, Van de Perre (1965) published ‘Domweg
dapper’ (‘Happily Brave’), a project in
collaboration with Chinese poet Bei Dao.
In it, the jury remarked Van de Perre’s continuing
stylistic progress: further proof that Gerolf van de
Perre as a painter very well knows his way around in the
sequential images of comics. |
